BDNY 2023 Trends and Colors

For BDNY 2023, our team attended and walked the exhibition hall rather than exhibit. Even though it was just a day trip, we packed a lot in (including a visit to the Cooper Hewitt) and left feeling inspired. In addition to having lots of productive conversations with people in the industry, we also paid attention to what we saw trending in the boutique hospitality industry. Three things really jumped out at us as we walked around.

BDNY 2023 Trends

Cozy Texture

There were a lot of products and accessories that just oozed cozy warmth. There were products such as oversized throws woven or knit with lush bouclé or chunky yarns. Other examples were products such as ottomans upholstered with textured fabrics. We also saw a lot of menswear looks that gave the impression of brushed wool.

Texture extended to artwork, too, including statement macrame pieces and other tactile fiber art. Knowing how cozy nature can make people, there were also examples of preserved nature, such as in moss walls or floral arrangements that bring the outdoors in without the maintenance of natural live plants.

Woven Looks

We saw many products all over the floor with large, woven looks. These all begged to be touched as they looked to be woven from a flexible material but were actually hard to the touch. There were also items made with woven webbing that created a sense of airlessness while still being structured.

Organic Shapes

Most of the furniture we saw while walking around had smooth, rounded edges and organic, sometimes amorphous, shapes. These soft edges added to the feeling of coziness without sacrificing sophistication. These pieces had a modern look that felt minimal without being cold.

Colors Trending

As for color, there was a lot of celadon, terracotta, aqua, and gold. The neutrals that mixed in were grey, black, and creams. The overall effect was warm and grounding and reminded us a lot of the color stories we saw trending at NeoCon 2023.

Many patterns in the Design Pool licensable library work well for these trends. For example, our Invisible Threads collection captures the look of texture in a digital print and is perfect for places that can’t have real texture, such as healthcare interiors. Also, the Wicker Good collection brings the look of wicker and rattan to any material through digital printing. Whatever you’re looking for, the perfect pattern for your project is in our library.

Between BDNY and the recent Printing United Expo, it’s clear that digital printing is coming for the interior market in a big way. It’s an exciting time to be in this industry and see how interior designers embrace this new technology and use it to customize commercial and residential interiors.
