Spring 2024 Color Trends

Spring has sprung here in New England (sort of), and it has us poring over runway shots to research spring 2024 color trends. We always check out what colors are trending on runways each spring and fall. Knowing these trends is like a snapshot of the mood of our current moment in time. It also gets us thinking about how this mood will be interpreted in residential and commercial interiors. This year, we see many common threads in color palettes and also overarching themes. Let’s talk about color first.

Spring 2024 Color Trends

Sparkle

This spring will definitely be shimmering. There was a lot of gold and metallic on runways, bringing sparkle and an overall glow to the looks. At times, this was glammed up, and at other times, paired with denim or leather for a grounding look.

Neutrals

The most popular neutral, by far, was white. Most whites were clean and pure, often worn with other white items for an overall white look. We also noted a lot of warm neutrals, such as camels and light golds. In addition, darker neutrals had a warmth to them, like worn leather.

Pastels

There were a lot of pastels on the runways, but not the cloyingly sweet kind. Lilac purple was especially prevalent, as was ballet pink and soft blues. These pastels all had a richness and purity that kept them from being too sweet.

The Rest

Even though lilac, pink, white, and metallic gold stood out, there were other colors worked in highlighting and accenting the trending colors. These were all clean, bright versions of the spectrum that offered an optimistic and grounding vibe.

Runway Themes

As we research colors, we always read about the inspirations of different houses. Understanding what the creative directors thought when they designed their collections and chose these colors is always valuable. Just as we saw similarities in color choices, we saw common themes emerge, too.

Real Clothes

It seemed many designers referenced designing “real” or “normal” clothes. They wanted their designs for the runway to be something people would want to wear, not just an expression of a concept. Miuccia Prada told reporters, “I got tired talking about ideas—let’s talk about clothes.” With this came a focus on quality, construction, and textile traditions such as embroidery.

Revisiting the Past and Updating it

Several houses celebrated milestone years, some with the same creative director in place, such as Dolce & Gabbana, and one with no creative director in place, Moschino. However, it was not only those with milestones looking back. Many houses pulled items from their archives and mixed these classic pieces with new ones through creative styling. In these cases, styling was essential. Many more people are thinking about the fashion industry’s impact on the environment. One solution for a more sustainable industry is to buy high-quality garments, take care of them, and keep them longer. Styling these pieces smartly breathes new life into classic pieces.

Travel

Several fashion houses were inspired by travel. Maybe it’s because so many of us are doing it again after such a long break or because current events are making us want to escape. (We’ve been doing the same here.) Either way, the result is the same. Designers are traveling and bringing their inspiration back with them. Sometimes, this results in collections thick with nostalgia and, at other times, romance. All inspire the urge to dust off your passport.
