Fly Away, a Collection Inspired by Birds

The Design Pool collection Fly Away features a small group of whimsical patterns inspired by birds. Birds have long fascinated humans with their colors, songs, and flights. They fly into and out of our environments, bringing moments of surprise and joy. Even in the most bustling urban environments, you will find birds adapting, surviving, and thriving.

In this collection, Kristen wanted to tap into that feeling of fun and surprise that birds inspire. She drew very stylized birds that are bursting with personality. The playfulness of these birds makes the patterns particularly suitable for pediatric environments in healthcare facilities, playroom décor in residential settings, or products used by children. Yet, they’re not too childlike. This ensures they are just as useful for any product or environment that needs a touch of whimsy.

Inspired by Birds & Their Symbolism

Before designing, Kristen researched the symbolism and meaning birds have in different cultures around the world. She was particularly interested in the birds she often saw in her region of New England.

Birds generally symbolize community, family, parenthood, and romance. According to the bird enthusiast’s blog World Birds, “Baby birds symbolize innocence and youth, whereas parent birds symbolize guardianship and protection. Birds’ nests symbolize the home.” Bird symbolism is a deep rabbit hole to fall down, but here is a bit about what we learned about some of the birds we spot regularly.

Swan family on the river in Providence, Rhode Island.

Swans are easily recognizable with their graceful curves and large bodies. People often associate swans with elegance and beauty. Swans mate for life and are known to be devoted parents, making them a symbol of parenthood.

Cardinals are seen frequently in New England. Even though they are often associated with Christmas since their red feathers look dramatic against white snow, they can be spotted throughout the year. They also mate for life, which makes them symbolic of romance, loyalty, and balance.

Blue Jays are another bird popular in New England and seen frequently out of (both) Kristen’s studio windows. These beautiful birds are quite noisy and often aggressive, associating them with good communication and confidence.

Doves are popular symbols of peace. Furthermore, they also carry religious symbolism for some people, signifying God’s love.

Sparrows are another bird popular in New England. These busy little birds have a surprising number of different songs and their busyness has grown to symbolize productivity and creativity.

Where can you use these patterns?

The patterns in Fly Away are easy to integrate into interior design projects. In addition, they’re suitable to license for products such as home goods or decor. Here is a little inspiration to get you started.

However you use these patterns, these cute little birds will bring you joy. Browse the Design Pool pattern library and find the perfect pattern for your project.
