Block Print Collection, New in the Library

Design Pool is thrilled to introduce our newest collection of patterns, Block Print, inspired by the timeless art of block printing. As a creative studio, we love using cutting edge technology to celebrate traditional textile techniques. Kristen’s creative process for these patterns began with carving and printing blocks, which she then scanned to create digital designs. Whether you need a pattern for textiles, wallpaper, stationery, floors, these patterns bring a unique, handcrafted feel to any material.

What is block printing?

Block printing is a centuries-old technique where intricate designs are carved into blocks of wood, linoleum, or rubber. These blocks are then inked and pressed onto fabric or paper. It’s an art form that takes patience and skill, and each piece has its own beautiful imperfections. These “imperfections” capture the spirit of the maker and assure that no two prints are exactly alike. That organic, imperfect quality is what makes the designs so dynamic and full of character.

Can you capture the magic of a block print in a digital pattern?

We think you can, especially if you start with motifs that were hand drawn and hand printed. In this collection, Kristen used motifs she drew and carved to create digital patterns in repeat. The seven patterns in this collection honor the process of block printing while also speaking to current design trends. From geometric shapes to allover textures, each pattern evokes the tactile, hands-on nature of the printing process. By incorporating subtle variations in color and texture, these digital designs possess a fresh, organic feel.

Find these patterns in the library!

You can find all seven of these patterns in the Design Pool pattern library. Whether you’re working on a new collection for your brand or searching for the perfect print for your next design project, these patterns are all ready to download and use.

If you love the look of block print-inspired patterns, I encourage you to check out our Delish and Farmer’s Market collections. Both of these collections were also created from hand-carved blocks and capture the beauty and spontaneity of block printing.

These patterns lend themselves beautifully to both large-scale applications and small details, making them incredibly versatile for a wide range of uses. Whether you’re creating home textiles, branding materials, or creative packaging, these designs add a distinctive, artisanal touch that’s hard to replicate.

Interested in trying block printing yourself? Kristen is teaching a class at Snow Farm, The New England Craft Program this spring.

(Update: this class is full, but you can be added to the waitlist.)
