A Fine Line Celebrates the Humble Line

A Fine Line is a collection of patterns inspired by the beauty of a simple line. Textile designer Anni Albers often quoted her teacher at the Bauhaus, Paul Klee, with his famous line about a line, “A drawing is simply a line going for a walk.” A simple line can be sophisticated, playful, elegant, and so much more. In this collection, Kristen wanted to explore how versatile a simple line could be in pattern design.

The collection plays with everything from random, wavy lines to grids of straight lines. Patterns are offered in colors with high contrast to help the lines stand out from the background. And like all our patterns, they are easy to scale both up and down without losing resolution. How is this possible? All the designs in the Design Pool pattern library are created in Illustrator. This means that the files you download are in vector format. The benefit of a vector file is the ability to scale it easily without losing any resolution since it’s not based on a certain number of pixels per inch. This makes it perfect for fine lines that quickly distort when scaled in a raster format.

Let’s take a closer look at the patterns in A Fine Line.

City Skyline Stripes are line drawings of three of Kristen’s favorite cities, New York, Boston, and Chicago. Yet, they also don’t feel super specific. This makes it perfect for an urban setting anywhere.

Patterns Scribble and Trek are both allover patterns that almost feel like a texture.

Sketch Block and Telephone Lines both use lines to create shapes in an overall grid layout.

Bauhaus Stripe and Divide are two patterns that play with groups of lines working together to form overall patterns. Each also creates interesting shapes in the negative space.

Kristen designed Delicate Leaves and Drawn Flowers with thin, flowing lines to achieve an organic pattern.

Bulb is a beautiful ogee pattern created out of evenly spaced lines. The pattern has so much dimension that it feels almost three-dimensional.

Finally, four allover patterns with a sophisticated geometry. Pathway, Line Drawing, Drawn Circles, and Semi Circle Overlay are all light and airy with texture in the ground to add a softness.

All these patterns are available now to license in the Design Pool pattern library. Get started today using your favorite in your next project.
