Radio Waves, a Closer Look at the Collection
When designing the patterns in The Cryptology Collection, Kristen used a unique technique she developed exclusively for this collection. Her initial inspiration was to pay homage to the women codebreakers whose work went unrecognized in their lifetime. What better way to do this, than with codes.
Kristen created a collection of patterns, each containing a secret coded message. In the case of Radio Waves, the messages reference two significant things. The first is the invention of the wireless telegraph, which fundamentally changed how wars are fought and necessitated the need for codes. Secondly, the collection pays homage to WAVES, Women Accepted for Volunteer Services. The Navy established this program as a way for women to volunteer their services since enlisting was not an option for women.
Beginning with those coded messages, she created shapes and ultimately patterns. Learn more about this technique, and the collection, in this video.
