Color Trends from Fall 2020 Fashion

A few months ago we talked about Spring 2020 color trends and this month we’re looking at trends from the Fall 2020 Ready-to-Wear runway shows. From oversized silhouettes to super-saturated colors, fall fashion has us inspired. The top trend we spotted from many designers was oversized tailoring. Coats are boxy and oversized and the silhouette overall is growing. Pants ranged from full, to flare, to billowy harem pants and even sleeves were getting puffy. 

In addition, lots of looks were solid and tonal but with additional interest using texture, such as pleats. There were lots and lots of pleats. Embellishment such as ruffles, beading, feathers, faux fur, and fringe also made an appearance. There were lots of metallic and leather, as well as big bold plaids and traditional menswear tweeds and woolens.

In addition to how the garments looked, we noticed a major theme related to sustainable textiles. Designers were paying attention to how their collections were made. Where are they sourcing their materials? Who is making their garments? Can they make their production chain more transparent? Consumers are aware of the toll fast fashion is having on the planet, and designers are responding.

What about color trends?

When it comes to color trends, there was a lot of black. In fact, some collections even seemed somber. Two different color stories emerged to work with the black.

The first color story was dominated by primary colors with a ton of bright red, cobalt blue, pure yellow and so much deep, rich emerald greens. Super-saturated oranges, golds, and aquas colors rounded out the emeralds and primaries. The second color story was lighter, pastels that aren’t super sweet. Think, butter yellow, powder blue, camel, pale orange, pale pink and grey.
