Chocolate Church Arts Center presents: Eight

You’re invited to join Design Pool at Chocolate Church Arts Center in Bath, Maine for Eight, an art exhibit featuring eight fiber artists from across the country. In this exhibition, each artist has created eight pieces of art, each measuring 8×8. Design Pool’s Kristen Dettoni and Kristin Crane are both participating. Kristen Dettoni is showing eight of her needlepunch color studies. Many of the colors she uses in her work contain yarn she naturally dyed.

Kristin Crane’s pieces were all handwoven and inspired by the ocean. She has also dyed her yarns and incorporates materials found on the beach in Rhode Island. Other artists featured are Rita Grendze, Nancy Machado, Wanda Miglus, Kristen Miller, Paula Stebbins Becker and Cathy Wilkerson.

Exhibition Inspiration

The idea for the exhibit was born out of a conversation between Paula and Kristen. In early 2020, they were each creating artwork in an 8×8 size and thought about exhibiting them together. The idea of many pieces of art the same size intrigued them. They invited six other artists to participate, including former colleagues and former classmates from their time at Cranbrook. Little did they know when this idea took shape that the first meeting would coincide with the beginning of the pandemic.

Beginning in 2020, eight fiber artists gathered each month on Zoom to share inspiration, talk about art, and support each other creatively during the pandemic. Together, they set a goal to have a collective exhibition and create work in the scale of 8×8 inches. The unique and diverse work created by this group of eight women embodies the spirit of hope, balance, and harmony while embracing the infinite power of friendship.
