2021 Colors of the Year Round Up

Each year we like to round up all the paint companies’ colors of the year. It always gives insight into where we were in the year that’s closing out and where we’re heading. When it comes to picking a Color of the Year for 2021, the colors differ from company to company. Yet, their picks for 2021 all had something in common: comfort.

For many, 2020 meant a lot of time at home and a lot of uncertainty. As a result, paint and color companies saw the need to create a sense of calm and tranquility in our spaces. Their color choices and palettes for 2021 are soothing, grounding, and comforting while also looking forward to brighter days ahead. And we always like to join in on the fun too and pick a Design Pool color of the year too. This year we went for one full of optimism and hope.

2021 Colors of the Year

Pantone clearly was tuned into this dual space we’ve all be inhabiting throughout 2020. As a result, this year they chose two colors this year, Ultimate Gray & Illuminating. These colors compliment and support each other and together are optimistic and grounding.

“The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.”– Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of The Pantone Color Institute

Shermin Williams chose Urbane Bronze. They wanted a color that helps people feel rooted in their homes. Inspired by nature, this color offers simplicity and sophistication.

Benjamin Moore’s color is Aegean Teal. This color inspires a comfortable and calm feeling. A feeling that radiates well being and invites you to settle in.

PPG chose the color Transcend, a midtone neutral drawing inspiration from the earth. It inspires a feeling of nostalgia. It moves away from the cool greys for a color that feels cozier.

Behr’s color palette of 21 colors elevates “your comfort zone.” The palette is grounded in three neutrals: Smoky White, Almond Wisp and Seaside Villa. The entire palette is a beautiful range of warm colors radiating a feeling of contentment.

Here at Design Pool, our color of the year an energetic yellow. We’re looking to bring light and optimism into 2021 through beautiful pattern with happy bursts of color. Sure, we’ve been home a lot in 2020. Yet, with fewer demands on our time, we’ve also been outdoors more and enjoying nature. The warmth of the sun, even in winter, lifts the mood and gets us inspired for brighter days ahead.
